HATTEBERG'S WALK-OFF SINGLE CLOCKS GIANTS

OAKLAND -- The second half of the Bay Series Rivalry started out with a big bang from the Athletics who won it in 11 innings with a Scott Hatteberg walk-off single.  After a single to Jermaine Dye and a hit batter, Hatteberg smashed a single through the drawn-in infield to give Oakland the win and shrink the division deficit to 5.5 games.

Oakland had been ahead by 1 run going into the 6th but 3 consecutive botch outfield X-plays produced 3 runs for the Giants.  But in the bottom half of the inning, San Francisco walked the bases loaded and then walked the next two consecutive batters.  The A's had just 8 hits in the game and left 13 on base.

The Athletics are 19-4 over their past 23 games.  They're now tied for 2nd in the AL West.

A'S INTENTLY WATCHING HALOS DOUBLE-HEADER

SEATTLE -- Coming off a recent road-swing that saw them win 7 of 9, the Oakland A's still find themselves 7 games back of the Anaheim Angels heading into a huge 4 game road series against the M's starting tonight.  Meanwhile, in Arlington, the Rangers will host a day-night double-header against the Angels.

The A's will be watching the game from their Safeco clubhouse.  If the Angels are swept today in Texas and Oakland wins tonight, the A's will be just 5.5 games back, the closest they've been since June 1st.

Seattle swept Oakland at home earlier this month, knocking their division deficit to 9.5 games.  The A's need redemption.  First pitch in Arlington starts in a matter of minutes.

A'S DROP LAUGHER IN PITTSBURGH

PITTSBURGH -- Maty McNeil desperately wanted to start out the roadtrip with a win.  Instead he saw the A's drop a laugher to the subpar Pirates, 9-2.  Pittsburgh put together a monster 3rd inning, plating 6 runs on a flurry of hits and A's errors.  The A's committed 3 errors in the game and only managed 5 hits.

Oakland starter Aaron Harang was chased in the 4th.  The bullpen allowed 3 runs (2 earned in relief).  Aramis Ramirez cracked 2 doubles.  He was one of five Pirates to have 2-hit games.  Pittsburgh's Josh Fogg threw a complete game.  He threw 129 pitches and allowed just five hits.

Luckily for Oakland, Anaheim lost their game in St. Louis.  Anaheim's loss keeps the standings intact: Oakland remains 8 games back.  Tim Hudson and Barry Zito will finish this series for Oakland.

Around the League:

• Curt Schilling's record now stands at an amazing 14-0.  Schilling has started 15 games; he has one no-decision.  Every start has been a quality start.  He has received 5.73 runs of support on average in his starts.

Every team in the NL Central is under .500.  The Cardinals lead the division at 32-36.

Tim Wakefield is having a virtuoso season.  In 73 innings pitched (mostly in relief) he has allowed a mere 36 hits.  He has not allowed a home run to a righties (126 at-bats).

• The Yankees are 13-2 so far this June.  They've won 6 straight and lead the AL Wild Card.  They own the league's best home record at 27-9.

A'S SWEEP BAY SERIES

SAN FRANCISCO -- The Oakland A's were able to sweep the Bay rivalry series today, clipping the Giants by just one run.  The 5-4 victory was Oakland's 4th straight as they try desperately to makeup ground in the AL West.

Cory Lidle pitched 7 strong innings and Randy Velarde hit a key home run in the early go.  The A's finished the game with 10 hits.  San Francisco made a bid in the late innings but they stranded Bonds 1-out triple at third and were unable to tie.  Bonds finished 2-for-11 in the series with a home run.

The A's get an off-day tomorrow before starting a favorable road schedule that will see them play the Pirates and Reds.  "It's discouraging to see Anaheim continue to win, but we have to continue winning and not worry about it.  If we can have a good roadtrip, we'll make up ground, guaranteed," said Maty McNeil postgame.

A'S TURN ICY AFTER HOT STREAK

OAKLAND -- After winning 9 of 10 games throughout late May, the A's have turned ice cold, dropping 5 of their last 6.  The Mariners finished a series sweep yesterday.  Anaheim, who had been slumping, has picked it up.  Oakland now trails the division-leading Angels by 8.

The Athletics begin inter-league schedule with a game tonight at home against the Houston Astros (23-35).  They'll finish their nine-game homestand in the next series vs. Milwaukee Brewers (27-32).  Oakland needs to perform strong in inter-league.
