A'S COAST TO 7TH STRAIGHT WIN

BALTIMORE -- A visibily intoxicated Maty McNeil watched his Oakland A's squad coast to their 7th straight win in Baltimore, narrowing their deficit to 5 games in the AL West.  Maty McNeil was seen pumping his chest like a maniacal ape, throwing beer cans in joy, and repeatedly calling Jermaine Dye "my nigga" in the 6-1 win.  McNeil stacked his lineup with righty heavy hitters against Baltimore's Chris Maduro.  Righties finished a combined 5-for-23, 1 HR vs. Maduro.

It was clear the Oakland A's dugout was having fun.  Even when they struckout, there were no worries.  Dancing and high spirits were seen in the dugout.

The A's will finish the short, 2-game series in Baltimore tomorrow.  Big Barry Zito will be on the mound.  Rumor is, he wants to bang Hilary Duff from Disney's Lizzie McGuire.  Pound it out, Big Z. #underagepussy

Around the League:

• The Anaheim Angels lost again, their 3rd loss in their past 4 games.  Maty McNeil chuckled heartily at the news.

Ichiro Suzuki has overtaken Adam Kennedy for the batting title in the American League.  Ichiro is 12-for-his-last-20, with a homer and two ribs.  We expect the Japanese queer to take the batting title.

Pittsburgh's Brian Giles, aside from having a dope Cali pad, is raking of late.  The white boy has hit 3 home runs in his past 5 games, pushing his season total to 20 (second only to Barry Bonds).

• Alex Rodriguez clubbed his 19th home run of the season last night.  He celebrated with some imported pussy.

Andruw Jones and Barry Bonds are tied for the NL-lead in RBI's with 52 ribs.  Both of these niggers live fly, get at me I'll show you their cribs.

A'S COMPLETE 6-0 HOMESTAND

OAKLAND -- Just a week ago, the Athletics were 9.5 back of the division-leading Angels and their postseason prospects were looking grim.  They had just been swept by the Blue Jays in Toronto and there was mutiny in the clubhouse: players buckled under Maty McNeil's stern managerial approach.  Jeremy Giambi was dealt, Mike Holtz was designated, Frank Menechino was optioned to AAA.  And finally, after a break in the schedule that saw them play the Orioles and Devil Rays, Oakland stepped up with a 6-0 homestand, outscoring opponents 39-23.

Today, Oakland won their 6th straight behind home runs by Miguel Tejada and Randy Verlarde at the top of the lineup.  Tejada is finally heating up: he's hit .290 with 3 home runs and 3 RBI's in the past week.
The A's finished their homestand, sweeping the Devil Rays 6-5.  Billy Koch had another...shitty performance.  He continues to work with pitching coach Rick Andersen on his secondary pitches.

Maty McNeil announced that today's start was Erik Hiljus' last start of the season.  From now on he will be used solely out of the bullpen and then probably designated by June 1.

"Dissapointing," said Hiljus, "Especially because I was finally getting it together."

"We're shedding dead-weight.  Hiljus can't be relied upon.  We're not losing anymore ground to the Angels the rest of the way.  With all due respect to Hiljus, he's a liability," said McNeil.

The Angels lost their game today against Minnesota, 2-6.  The A's will now travel to Baltimore and Tampa Bay before starting inter-league play.

Around the League:

• Cleveland's Omar Vizquel had a 4-hit performance last night, falling short of the cycle by a triple.  The Indians' shortstop smashed his 6th home run of the season in the 4th inning.  Vizquel has also converted a mind-blowing 94.7% of his chance plays at shortstop this season #goldglove.

The New York Yankees lead the AL Wild Card by a mere 2 games over Oakland.  Minnesota is 2.5 back, Cleveland 3, and Texas 3.5 back.

Kansas City catcher Brett Mayne simply halts the running game.  Mayne has thrown out 65% of would-be base-stealers, the best mark in the American League.  Surprisingly, Mayne's arm is considered simply "average."

• The Tampa Bay Devil Rays cannot find luck.  They're 0-5 in extra inning games and 5-15 in one-run games.  Their record stands at an MLB-worst 11-37.

The Arizona Diamondbacks and Boston Red Sox are the only teams in the Majors to have not lost 3 games in a row at any point this season.  The longest winning streaks are owned by the Red Sox and Yankees (11).

NEWLY-ACQUIRED MABRY SPARKS 5TH STRAIGHT WIN

OAKLAND -- John Mabry, recently traded for Jeremy Giambi, has hit the ground running for Oakland, smashing two home runs in today's 9-6 win over Tampa Bay.  In two games with the Athletics, Mabry is hitting .417 with 4 home runs and 9 RBI's in 12 at-bats.  His OPS stands at a nut-crunching 1.878.

Greg Myers, Miguel Tejada, and Eric Chavez also hit home runs in the game.  The A's chased Devil Ray's starter Travis Harper after 1 1/3 innings.

Newly promoted stater Aaron Harang made the start for an injured Cory Lidle.  Harang received the win.  His final line: 7ip, 6h, 6r, 4er, 3bb, 4k.

Oakland has now won 5 straight after being swept embarassingly by the Blue Jays.  The finale of the three game series is tomorrow: Starters - TB: Joe Kennedy (3-5, 2.79) vs. Erik Hiljus (3-4, 7.49).

MULDER TOSSES 5TH CG

OAKLAND -- Mark Mulder allowed Maty McNeil to rest his bullpen, tossing a complete game at Network Asc Coliseum where the Oakland Athletics beat the Tampa Bay Devil Rays 6 to 2.

Oakland claimed the early lead in the first inning as they scored 2 runs on 1 base hits.  The big moment was provided by Eric Chavez who excited the crowd when he cracked a two-run shot.  Oakland finished with just 6 hits in the victory.

The victory went to Mulder (6-0) who went the distance allowing 2 runs. Paul Wilson (1-4) suffered the loss.  He served up 3 gopher balls in 8 innings.

Around the League:

• Arizona's Curt Schilling improved to an incredible 10-0 in a 7-2 win over the Dodgers.  He has won his every start.  He leads the Majors with 109 strikeouts.

In 10 starts (58 innings), Kevin Millwood of the Braves has yet to surrender a single home run.  Millwood leads the Majors in most innings without allowing a gopher ball.

The Boston Red Sox continue to hold the Majors' best record at 36-9.  Their 19-4 mark in April was a Major League best and their current 17-5 May is also best.

• The Chicago Cubs, consensus pick for last in the NL Central, lead the division by 4 games.  Their pitching ranks 5th in the NL with a 3.92 ERA.

The Phillies' Mike Lieberthal has a current 18-game hitting streak.  If he gets a hit in tomorrow's game, he will tie Jacque Jones for the longest streak of the season.

KOCH MELTS

TORONTO -- In a truly incredible turn of events, the Oakland A's led 5-3 going into the bottom of the 11th only watch Billy Koch blow the save and then allow the game-winning run to score in the 12th.

Staked with a 2-run lead, Koch allowed a huge, pinch-hit, bases-clearing double that tied the game.  He then gave up a walk to Shannon Stewart to start the 12th and a single to Berg, putting runners on the corners.  Mike Venafro was summoned from the pen and incredibly enough, he struckout Jose Cruz, Jr. and popped out Vernon Wells.  But then, with the bases loaded (Delgado had been intentionally walked), Venafro lost all control and walked in the winning run.

Miguel Tejada finished 0-for-5, pushing his season average to .226.

"Speechless," said Maty McNeil.

The A's fuckin' blew it.

HATTEBERG'S 9TH INNING BOMB SALVAGES SERIES

BOSTON -- Scott Hatteberg hit a towering, tie-breaking home run over the Green Monster in the 9th inning to propel the A's to a 5-4, come-from-behind victory, avoiding a sweep at the hands of the Red Sox.  28,857 endured rainy conditions to watch the red hot Red Sox give one away late in the game.  Oakland had trailed 3-0 but scored 4 unanswered to win the game, moving them back to the .500 mark at 20-20.

Miguel Tejada finally snapped out of a tough slump with a big double in 6th that was followed up by an Eric Chavez home run.  It was Chavez's second home run of the series.

Oakland nearly blew it in the 9th.  Frank Menechino popped up an sac bunt which led to a double play.  But Scott Hatteberg redeemed him with his 10th home run of the season.

Boston got their three runs on a Carlos Baerga single that followed a strange Tim Hudson balk.  They added another with timely hitting late.

BOSTON COMES FROM BEHIND, WINS

BOSTON -- The Red Sox won in walk-off fashion tonight, surmounting a one-run deficit and beating Oakland 5-4 in their last at-bat.  Billy Koch was summoned to pitch the bottom of the 9th.  He did not record an out.  He allowed a double to Johnny Damon and then a sharp single to Shea Hillenbrand.  Hillenbrand was mobbed at 1st base.

Manny Ramirez was recently placed on the DL and was not in uniform.  Regardless, the Red Sox were able to pound out 13 hits, including a 4-for-5 performance by Shea Hillenbrand.

Eric Chavez smashed a huge, game-tying home run in 6th that lifted Oakland's hopes, but the fun didn't last as Boston rebounded in the 2nd half of the inning.  The victory improves Boston's record to 8-1 in one-run games.

"Tough, just tough," said Maty McNeil.  "Boston just found a way.  I am, however, becoming truly concerned about Miguel Tejada.  Yet another 0-for performance.  His average now stands at .232. -- and it's mid-May."

Around the League:

• Cleveland's Ellis Burks has 6 home runs with 14 RBI's over the past 10 days.

The Boston Red Sox are a perfect 5-0 in extra inning games.  They are the only team in the majors to remain perfect in extra frames.

Jimmy Rollins' 12 errors lead the Major Leagues.  Rollins has muffed 6% of his total chances this year.  His X-play percentage still remains at a respectable 70.7%.  Clearly,
Rollins is missing some routine plays.

• Kansas City catcher Brett Mayne has thrown out 64.3% of would-be base-runners, tops in the AL.

Relievers are hitting .308 with 13 HR's off Oakland's bullpen.  Only Detroit and Texas have worse bullpens.

ROBERTO ALOMAR GOES 0-FOR-7

LOS ANGELES -- Mets second baseman Roberto Alomar finished a stunning 0-for-7 with 3 strikeouts in a 14-inning 3-2 defeat to the Dodgers.  Alomar's batting average dropped 13 points in the effort.  He left the game with a still respectable .274 average.

"One of the worst nights of my life," Alomar said.  Years later, Roberto Alomar would contract AIDS and infect several women.

The Dodgers got their walk-off win off an Eric Karros slap single that followed an Alex Cora double.  With the win, the Dodgers improve to an NL-best 26-12.

Oakland A's manager Maty McNeil was watching the game in Boston.  The A's and Red Sox will square off tomorrow.

In St. Louis: Another exciting game around the league featured the rival Cubs and Cardinals.  Albert Pujols hit a tie-breaking 3 run home run in the 9th to propel St. Louis to victory.  It was Pujols' 11th home run of the year.  He's tied for 8th in the NL.
