OAK DROPS OPENER

NEW YORK -- The A's dropped the opening game in New York 8-7 despite a strong 9th inning effort that saw Oakland score 5 against Mariano Rivera.  Derek Jeter finished 4-for-5 with 4 RBI's.  Manager Maty McNeil chimed in post-game:

ERSTAD HITS FOR CYCLE

>>BREAKING NEWS: In Pittsburgh, the Padres defeated the Pirates after 22 innings of play.  Ray Lankford's two-run single provided the key offensive moment in the top of the 22nd.  It ranks as the longest game of the season.

ANAHEIM -- Darin Erstad hit for the cycle and had 5 RBI and Scott Schoeneweis tossed a complete game as the Anaheim Angels beat the Toronto Blue Jays by a score of 9 to 2.

Erstad punished Toronto with his bat.  He cleared the fences for a two-run home run in the 1st inning, doubled in the 3rd inning, tripled plating two runs in the 4th inning and lashed a single plating a run in the 6th inning.  Anaheim managed 12 hits in their victory.

The victory was credited to Schoeneweis(3-1) who went the distance, allowing 2 runs. Brandon Lyon(1-3) was the loser.  He allowed 9 hits and 2 walks in 5 innings.

'I felt great out there today' Erstad said.  'I was seeing the ball perfectly, and I was right on it with my swing.'

A'S MELT IN FINALE

OAKLAND -- The A's melted like a scoop of mint chocolate chip ice cream on the sprouting tits of an 11 year old girl in the Vegas sun in their finale against New York today.  The Yankees launched a 17-hit attack, delivering Barry Zito his 3rd loss of the season in a fuckin' barn-burner.  Jason Giambi finished the day 4-for-5 with a home run and Jorge Posada was 3-for-4 with 2 big flies.

"I like ice cream, and we fuckin' ate it," Yanks Manager Joe Torre said.

Barry Zito was mere pedestrian in his start today.  He allowed 5 earned runs in 5 innings.  Jeff Tam was abominable in relief, allowing 4 earned runs in 1 inning.

Mike Mussina got the win, going seven strong innings.  Athletics' Scott Hatteberg hit another home run.  He's been hot of late. Derek Jeter came into the game in a 3-for-39 funk and left with 3 hits.

"An ugly fucking game that bothered me slightly, but we took the series.  Can't wait to designate a few relievers," said Maty McNeil.

OAK PITCHERS 2-HIT BOMBERS!

OAKLAND --  Oakland A's pitchers, led by starter Erik Hiljus, limited the Bronx Bombers to just 2 hits (their lowest total of the season) in a 2-1 nail-biter victory!  Erik Hiljus dodged bullets, walking four batters in his 5 innings, but Venafro, Bradford, and Koch pitched flawless relief.  Orlando Hernandez pitched a complete game for New York but took the loss.  What a pitcher's duel!

As Billy Koch struckout Enrique Wilson to end the game, Manager Maty McNeil pumped his chest wildly and threw a fist into the air.  Yanks batters left 6 runners on base, stranding lead-off walks right-and-left.  Soriano, Jeter, and Giambi all went hitless.  The Yankees did not register their 2nd hit until the 7th inning.

"This is a huge lift for us.  I credit Hiljus who stared down this Yankee order fearlessly.  Proud of these guys.  It wasn't easy but this has got to be our biggest win thus far."

YANKS SWEEP IN

OAKLAND -- The villains from last season's Division Series are in town.  The New York Yankees and their cast of big bats are in Oakland for a three game series beginning today.

Despite equal success in 2001, it's been a season contrast for the two teams so far this season. Oakland has sputtered out the gate, while the Yankees hold a respectable 12-8 mark. Big bats have been responsible for New York's success: the Yanks are 2nd in the American League in team home runs. Alfonso Soriano has clubbed 8 in just 93 at-bats. Pitching has been strong as well, particularly behind the arms of David Wells and Andy Pettitte. They stand at a combined 3-1 with a 2.06 ERA.

Both New York and Oakland have struggled in crucial one-run games this year. The teams are 2-5 and 0-2 respectively. The Yanks have scored 10 or more runs 4 times this season.

Probable Pitchers:
Game 1: NYY - Orlando Hernandez (2-0, 3.60) vs. OAK - Erik Hiljus (0-2, 11.25)
Game 2: NYY - David Wells (2-0, 1.93) vs. OAK - Tim Hudson (1-1, 5.63)
Game 3: NYY - Mike Mussina (1-2, 4.30) vs. OAK - Barry Zito (2-2, 2.12)

A'S TAKE FINALE, SPLIT SERIES

Lidle congratulated by teammates

OAKLAND -- The Oakland A's won for just the second time in seven games tonight, beating the Halos 5-2 behind a quality start from Cory Lidle (1-0).  David Justice hit his first home run of the season, a three run shot in the 3rd inning, and Scott Hatteberg and Mark Ellis each had multiple hit games at the top of the order.

Cory Lidle was Oakland's anchor, pitching 7 strong innings and allowing just a run on 5 hits.  Anaheim did not have an extra base hit until the 9th when they brought the tying run to the plate against Mike Magnante.  Magnante was able to get Eckstein to popout, sending 35,902 Oakland fans home happy.

Mike Coangelo got the start in center for the A's because Terrence Long was optioned to AAA to work on his swing mechanics.  Long cleared waivers just before the game.

The win improves the A's record to 3-4 vs. divisional rival Anaheim.  The A's next series comes against the Yankees, meanwhile the Angels will travel to Seattle.

Around the League:

• Magglio Ordonez is the leading candidate for the triple crown.  He leads the league in average (.492), home runs (9), and RBI's (33).  He holds a 13-game hit streak and a 10-game run scoring streak.  During his hitting streak he's batting .536 with 7 home runs.

The Boston Red Sox won their eighth straight after sweeping a double-header against Kansas City.  Tim Wakefield earned the save in the first game.  His scoreless inning streak now stands at 18 innings.  Nomar Garciaparra had six hits for the day.

The Oakland A's defense is scuffling.  The Athletics have converted just 69.3% of their chance plays this season.  Only Detroit ranks lower at 66.7%.

McNEIL FINED $15,000

NEW YORK -- Major League Baseball comissioner Bud Selig handed down a $15,000 fine to Oakland A's Manager Maty McNeil after his post-game racist tirade went public, stunning the baseball world.  After a 7-0 loss to the Angels, McNeil referred to his team's play as "nigger bullshit" before smashing a 40 ounce bottle of beer on a granite counter top, destroying both items.  He reportedly threatened to kill clubhouse personnel and threw a potted plant.

"We are examining the situation very closely," Athletics GM Billy Beane said.  "His behavior was absolutely explosive, incoherent, and scary.  As we understand it, an A's official said an unkind word to him after the loss and he simply lost it.  This is Milton Bradley-type behavior."

Several clubbies, speaking on the condition of anonymity, said they've noticed changes in the A's Manager in recent weeks.  "He's spent all his money, he's broke.  He's fighting demons.  He's convinced people are conspiring against him.  He's always either drinking or taking pills.  He's a pill freak."

McNeil left a video apologizing for the incident:

"NIGGER BULLSHIT"

OAKLAND -- A noticeably intoxicated Maty McNeil slammed his team for it's "nigger bullshit half-ass play" in a post-game interview after a 7-0 shutout at the hands of the Anaheim Angels.  Barry Zito took his second loss in a row, surrendering a big 3-run shot from Troy Glaus that buried the A's early.

"Fuck every pregnancy, fuck every child soon to be born," the lusty-lunged McNeil said while ripping his phone from the land-line.  "Fuck every nigger, every white person, fuck every little kid learning to tie his shoes for the first time.  I am full of hate right now.  This game was fucking automatic: automatic fucking outs.  I am fucking tired of itHit the fucking ball.  Curse the fucking day Washburn out-pitches Barry Zito.  A game like this makes me want to knock an old bitch's groceries out of her hands and watch them squashed in the streets.  Jesus nigger Christ, get these fucking microphones the fuck out of my face.  Fuck it. I hate the Angels, fuck you.  Burn in hell Nick Adenhart.  I'll take whatever fine MLB sees fit.  Fuck all the Jews in Los Angeles."

OAKLAND GOBBLED UP

Cameron homers
OAKLAND -- The A's simply cannot buy a victory.  Tonight they dropped another in routine fashion: Erik Hiljus pitched like garbage and nobody could step up with the big hit.  The A's are 3-7 over their last ten and have dropped to the basement in the A.L. West.

"I don't know if it's a lack of chemistry or what, but I am not excited about this offense," Maty McNeil said.  The A's managed 11 hits, including a big two-run double in the eighth by Hatteberg, but it wasn't enough to counter Mike Cameron's two home runs and Ichiro's 3-for-5 day.

The Mariners buried Hiljus early with 4 runs over the first 3 innings.  A Mariners batter reached to start each of the first 6 innings.

"Come time for the Anaheim series, it's balls to the wall," said McNeil.

Around the League:

• Baltimore's Jay Gibbons has homered in 6 consecutive games.  He is tied for the league lead in homers.  Over his past 6 games he is 10-for-24 with 10 RBI's.

Minnesota's Jacque Jones extended his hitting streak to 15 games after slugging 2 home runs in a 5-3 win vs. the Royals.  Jones has a hit in every game this season.

Tony Womack committed a crucial error in the 10th inning that allowed the St. Louis Cardinals to beat the Diamondbacks 5-4.  Albert Pujols, who hit 2 home runs in the game, hit the grounder that Womack muffed.

• Boston's Tim Wakefield has yet to allow an earned run this season.  In his 2 starts, he's pitched 14.2 innings and allowed a single unearned run. Surprisingly, he's yielded 11 walks.

MULDER TO DL, FYHRIE RECALLED

The Athletics placed starter Mark Mulder on the 15-day disabled list today due to a left forearm strain.  Mulder has been the A's most consistent starter, winning all three decisions and posting a 1.11 ERA.  Two of his starts have been complete games.  He is the only pitcher in the league to post two complete games this season.

The A's have recalled Mike Fyhrie from AAA Sacramento.  He will make Mulder's scheduled start on 4/20 vs. Anaheim.

KOCH FALTERS AGAIN, CLOSER ROLE IN JEOPARDY

OAKLAND -- Billy Koch blew his 2nd save of the season in a game that Oakland had in the bag, and for the third time in a week, the A's gave one away.

"This is incredibly frustrating.  We can't help but give away free wins to our opponent.  This is a disaster.  The bullpen has failed us.  And it's getting to the point now where I'm scared to call for relief.  Billy Koch's closer role is up in the air at this time.  He has simply failed, period.  In his six appearances he's thrown nothing but batting practice.  I can't stand these losses anymore.   We have lost every one run game and that will kill you in the aggregate," said Maty McNeil

Eric Chavez had a huge home run to push the game to extras.  But once again, the A's bullpen imploded, allowing a Carlos Guillen home run to bury it.

"Sickening and just beside myself right now," said McNeil.
