MULDER SALVAGES ANAHEIM SERIES

ANAHEIM -- After watching Barry Zito dealt his first loss of the season yesterday, the A's needed Mulder on top of his game tonight to avoid a series sweep.  Mulder rose to the challenge, pitching his 2nd complete game shutout of the season in a 4-0 Oakland win.  Mulder struck out 8 and allowed just 6 hits.  His ERA has dropped below Zito's and now stands at 1.11.

The A's scored 2 runs on back-to-back singles with runners on the corners in the 5th.  Eric Chavez finished 2-for-4 with an RBI and double.  Mark Ellis continued to make an impression since being called up.  He's hitting .440.

The Angels were unable to muster an extra base hit.  Nevertheless, they win the first series meeting between the teams of the season.  Oakland and Anaheim tied for 12 runs a piece in the series.  The Angels' .310 team average still stands atop the A.L.

Around the League:

Minnesota's Jacque Jones has recorded a hit in each of the Twin's 13 games this season.  He is the only player in the majors to maintain a hitting streak since the season's first game.

The Dodgers have won 7 straight and own the Majors' best record at 10-2.  Their 2.65 team ERA is second in the NL.

• Rafael Palmeiro has been on fire.  He is 10-for-his-last-28 with 6 home runs.  In the series against Oakland he hit 4 jacks.
