NEW YORK -- Major League Baseball comissioner Bud Selig handed down a $15,000 fine to Oakland A's Manager Maty McNeil after his post-game racist tirade went public, stunning the baseball world. After a 7-0 loss to the Angels, McNeil referred to his team's play as "nigger bullshit" before smashing a 40 ounce bottle of beer on a granite counter top, destroying both items. He reportedly threatened to kill clubhouse personnel and threw a potted plant.
"We are examining the situation very closely," Athletics GM Billy Beane said. "His behavior was absolutely explosive, incoherent, and scary. As we understand it, an A's official said an unkind word to him after the loss and he simply lost it. This is Milton Bradley-type behavior."
Several clubbies, speaking on the condition of anonymity, said they've noticed changes in the A's Manager in recent weeks. "He's spent all his money, he's broke. He's fighting demons. He's convinced people are conspiring against him. He's always either drinking or taking pills. He's a pill freak."
McNeil left a video apologizing for the incident:
