OAKLAND -- The villains from last season's Division Series are in town. The New York Yankees and their cast of big bats are in Oakland for a three game series beginning today.
Despite equal success in 2001, it's been a season contrast for the two teams so far this season. Oakland has sputtered out the gate, while the Yankees hold a respectable 12-8 mark. Big bats have been responsible for New York's success: the Yanks are 2nd in the American League in team home runs. Alfonso Soriano has clubbed 8 in just 93 at-bats. Pitching has been strong as well, particularly behind the arms of David Wells and Andy Pettitte. They stand at a combined 3-1 with a 2.06 ERA.
Both New York and Oakland have struggled in crucial one-run games this year. The teams are 2-5 and 0-2 respectively. The Yanks have scored 10 or more runs 4 times this season.
Probable Pitchers:
Game 1: NYY - Orlando Hernandez (2-0, 3.60) vs. OAK - Erik Hiljus (0-2, 11.25)
Game 2: NYY - David Wells (2-0, 1.93) vs. OAK - Tim Hudson (1-1, 5.63)
Game 3: NYY - Mike Mussina (1-2, 4.30) vs. OAK - Barry Zito (2-2, 2.12)
