| Johnny Olerud can't quite reach Eric Chavez's single in the 7th. |
SEATTLE -- The A's were determined not to let a good start by Barry Zito go to waste. Trailing 1-0 since the 1st inning, the A's plated 4 big runs in the 7th against tough lefty Arthur Rhodes and snatched a victory from the Mariners, winning 5-1.
In the 7th, Scott Hatteberg battered a double off the center field wall to score Olmedo Saenz, tying the game at 1. But Oakland was far from done. After a walk and force play put runners on the corners, Eric Chavez hit a chance play (X) to sure-handed Johnny Olerud. Olerud ranged to his right but could not get to the ball, allowing the would-be game-winning run to score. Shigetoshi Hasegawa was summoned from the pen and was rudely introduced by David Justice who hit a 2-run double.
"The fact they pulled off such a quick rally against Arthur Rhodes is impressive," Barry Zito said after the game. "I don't care about my own personal stats, I wasn't thinking about my record, I just wanted us to stay above .500 going into Texas."
"Barry can say what he wants, I want him to win 27 games this year," Maty McNeil said. "He wasn't coming out until we won. I know his usage is up, but fuck it, we aren't concerned with that this early."
The A's own a 4-3 record going into a series against Texas that will begin the day after tomorrow. The Rangers are just 1-5 on the year.
| Around the League: • Vladimir Guerrero had a monster game in Cincinnati tonight. He finished 4-for-5 with 3 home runs in Montreal's 11-8 defeat. Montreal's pitching ranks dead-last in the Majors (7.27 ERA). 4 of their 5 starters have ERA's north of 6.00. • Randy Johnson leads the National League in walks (8). Johnson has not picked up a win in his 2 starts despite pitching well (1.80 ERA). • Barry Bonds has 10 RBI's and 7 walks since the season's start. David Ortiz has 4 home runs in 20 at-bats. • The San Diego Padres remain win-less at 0-6. They've only hit 3 home runs as a team. Outfielder Mark Kotsay (whose wife is hot) is 2-for-24 to start the year. |
