A'S DRUB YANKS, 17-5

Zito was fatigued late in game
BRONX -- The Oakland A's torched the New York Yankees 17-5 in what was the worst loss of the season thus far for the Bombers.  The A's had big offensive nights from Mike Colangelo (3-for-4, 4 runs, 3 RBI), Scotty Hatteberg (3-for-6, HR, 4 RBI), Jermaine Dye (3-for-5, 3 runs, 5 RBI), and Eric Chavez (2-for-5, 3 runs, 1 RBI).

Barry Zito (3-3) got the win for Oakland.  He pitched a very strong game until the last inning when he became fatigued.  The Yankees were actually within one run 7th, but Oakland poured it on in the 8th inning with 9 runs.  Yankees pitcheers issued 11 free passes in the game.

"I'm so proud of my team tonight.  From top to bottom, guys showed up big.  Even when our lead was threatened, we didn't panic, we put up a crooked ass number in the 8th.  Lovin' it," said Manager Maty McNeil.  "We went ham.  If Fyhrie can give us a win tomorrow, our season record will improve to 4-2 vs. Yankees, an impressive mark."

The rubbergame of the series begins tomorrow.  It's a 1:05pm start here in the Bronx.

Around the League:

Pedro Martinez improved to 5-0 with his win last night for the surging Boston Red Sox. Martinez has a 1.33 ERA, 0.86 WHIP, and league-best 51 strikeouts.  The Red Sox as a team have won 14 of their last 16 and 6 straight.

Magglio Ordoñez is on fucking fire.  He slugged 3 home runs last night, bringing his season total to 16.  Ordonez is averaging 7.125 at-bats per home run.  Ordoñez is currently leading the triple-crown race.  And it's not even close.

Jim Thome of the Cleveland Indians has been hot of late.  In the past 10 days he's batting .529 with 5 HR and 7 RBI.

• Rodrigo Lopez of the Baltimore Orioles has quite a scoreless innings streak going.  He has not allowed a run in 20 innings, racking up 13 strikeouts during that time.

The A's will travel to Chicago after this series.  The White Sox own the best home record in the majors (11-1) .  The White Sox are batting .364 in clutch situations and .362 with the bases loaded.

Barry Bonds is going ham.  The steroid freak has slugged 14 home runs in just 91 at-bats.  He's also been walked 26 times, which leads the majors.

Vladimir Guerrero has 14 stolen bases and 9 home runs this season.  He's on pace to have a 40-40 season
