OAKLAND -- It was a marquee matchup between the American League's top starters but when the dust settled it was Pedro Martinez who prevailed. Pedro beat Barry Zito in a strong (though not excellent) performance against the A's tonight. Boston beat the Athletics, 7-3.
Pedro Martinez (6-0) pitched well, allowing 2 earned runs over 5.1 innings. It was his first non-quality start of the year but he got the win. Zito (3-3) allowed 4 earned runs over 6 innings. Jason Varitek plated two runs with a clutch single in 4th. Rickey Henderson followed up with a big home run.
Jermaine Dye finished 3-for-5 and Eric Chavez added a home run but it wasn't enough. The bottom four in the A's lineup could only muster one hit.
The victory extends Boston's winning streak to 11 games.
